If external help is needed
Dial 111
and ask for Police, Fire or Ambulance
Contact the University Security Centre and inform them of the situation. On Campus
Dial 6111
Fire
If the fire alarm bells ring continuously
Leave the building and assemble outside. Do Not use the lifts.
If you discover a fire
Press the nearest fire alarm AND ring 111. Use the hose reel or extinguisher for small fires. Close all doors and leave the building.
Electric Shock
Turn the power off. (Find out NOW where the main switches are in all the laboratories). Notify a staff member and begin resuscitation if necessary. Call for medical assistance.
Serious Injury
For a medical emergency or serious injury
- Call the Ambulance Service by dialling 111.
- If a heart attack is suspected ALSO call the University Cardiac Arrest Team Dial 7777 IMMEDIATELY and request defibrillation.
- Give first aid until the arrival of the ambulance or qualified medical expert.
Earthquake
- It is usually safer to remain inside a building in all but a major earthquake. Move away from windows that may break or anything that may fall. Take shelter under solid furniture or in a doorway.
- Do not start evacuation until major shaking has stopped. When the evacuation alarm sounds, follow the normal evacuation procedure.
- Be aware of possbile after shocks.
