CIG Professor involved in FRST funded project

CIG Professor Phil Bones is a key investigator in a FRST funded project led by Professor Phil Butler in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. This project aims to create a New Zealand industry supplying spectral x-ray detector systems to the international research and medical imaging markets. What will be known as the MARS (Medipix All Resolution System) imager will be manufactured and assembled by New Zealand industry for incorporation in the new generation of scanners manufactured by major global companies. The MARS imager will transform medical x-ray CT images from black and white to full colour with the potential to have a dramatic impact on medical diagnosis and on health care in New Zealand and the world.

CIG Ph.D. student wins Top Achiever Doctoral Scholarship

CIG Ph.D. student Victor Lo (thesis title: Iterative projection algorithms for image reconstruction) has won a prestigious Top Achiever Doctoral Scholarship, the highest level scholarships offered by the New Zealand Government. The recipient, Victor Lo, said he was honoured to receive a Top Achievers Scholarship. “I have submitted a couple of papers to conferences in the US this year and, if the papers are accepted, the travelling money will mean that I can attend one of them.” Victor is working on the development of new techniques to determine molecular structure. He said if he was successful, the time and cost involved in biomolecular structure determination would be dramatically reduced.
