Background

I was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England and was brought up in Felling an industrial town on the banks of the Tyne. I'm therefore a true Geordie. However for the last 20 years I have lived in New Zealand. I am very happy here and consider myself a Kiwi, although the locals will naturally disagree.

I obtained both my M.Sc and Ph.D from The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in Manchester, England in 1970 and 1976 respectively. Before and between these two events I worked for A. Reyrolle and Co. Ltd (apprentice, draftsman then engineer), a switchgear manufacturer in England, General Electric (project engineering) in the US and UMIST (temporary lecturer). I also obtained an HND in EE (1964)and Assoc. Membership of the IEE (by examination) (1967) at Rutherford College of Technology, Newcastle-upon-Type.

A wife, three children, a horse, dog, two cats and a large old house keep me quite busy. I enjoy escaping into the many quiet parts of New Zealand and also listening to classical and popular music (especially Brazilian). I also like the theatre and modern dance.
