ECE staff and postgrad student won top prizes in Research Photo Competition 2008

Philipp Hof, Dept of Electrical and Computer EngineeringPhilipp Hof, a technical staff, and Volker Nock, a Ph.D. student, of the ECE department, won the 1st and 3rd prize respectively in the College of Engineering's Research Photo Competition 2008. The competition was open to all staff members and postgraduate students in the College of Engineering and attracted almost 100 entries.

Philipp Hof was awarded $1000 for his image entitled Hard Disk Platters and Heads. The photograph shows the inside of a hard disk drive, its heads and the rotating platters with light reflecting from its polished surfaces. "It is a prime showcase of an embedded system and relating to many applied technologies used in the Digital Systems Laboratory," Philipp Hof said.

Volker Nock, Dept of Electrical and Computer EngineeringVolker Nock recived $250 for the photograph shows a Bio-Artificial Liver (BAL) prototype device made out of silicone incorporating 126 bioreactors and connecting channels arranged around a central inlet in 7 identical layers. Each layer is about 200 micrometer thick and channels are 100 micrometer wide. The device is filled with dye-coloured water for visualization, in a real BAL blood or plasma would flow through and liver cells would grow in the individual bioreactors. The device was fabricated using fabrication technology in the Department's Nanofabrication Laboratory.

Congratulations to both of them.
